When you think of the biggest supermarkets, Walmart is probably the first brand to come to mind. But the great thing about a free market is that even as a few giant companies make it to the top of the pile, there are always plenty of smaller, hungrier companies on the rise, looking to swoop in and take the throne through some amazing new service that the big guys aren’t flexible enough to offer.
This can be seen with the double threat of regional grocery store chains Publix and WinCo. These companies aren’t well known because they’re privately held, they don’t advertise much, and they’ve mostly carved out niches in Florida and the Western states, respectively. But as they’ve grown and pleased their customers immensely through their unique competitive advantages, they’ve started to appeal to a larger customer base, which has allowed them to move into new markets.
