The Difference Between Plugins and Integrations

January 25, 2017
The difference between Fishbowl plugins and integrations, Fishbowl BlogThere is a Web page detailing all of Fishbowl’s integrations with other business solutions. These include desktop and online software, as well as hardware and operating systems that Fishbowl is compatible with. There is also a separate Plugins page that has about two dozen solutions that go beyond simply integrating with Fishbowl and are full-blown plugins to the software. This begs the question, what is the difference between a Fishbowl plugin and an integration? I can answer that quite simply.

The Difference Between Them

A Fishbowl plugin is an integration that is built into Fishbowl’s software. It doesn’t need to be installed, but simply activated. An integration is a connection to any outside solution that is not part of the Fishbowl interface. Integrations are not built by the makers of those solutions, but by third-party developers using those solutions’ open API. So every plugin is an integration, but not every integration is a plugin. Most plugins are purchased separately from the main Fishbowl software and then activated as modules within Fishbowl’s interface. Basically, Fishbowl comes with all sorts of inactive modules known as plugins, which can be accessed at any time by companies wanting to take advantage of even more advanced features. Integrations, on the other hand, are completely separate entities that Fishbowl can transfer information to and receive information from. All right, have I explained it to death yet? I feel like I’m saying the same thing over and over at this point. Now let’s list all of Fishbowl’s plugins and integrations, so you’ll be able to see for yourself which ones are embedded in Fishbowl’s interface and which are not. These fall into many categories, including ecommerce platforms, accounting software, merchant services, shipping solutions, CRMs, and more. I have simply organized them into alphabetical order.
