Semper Fi is the shortened version of the U.S. Marine Corps’ motto, Semper Fidelis. It means “Always Loyal/Faithful.” I can’t think of a better term for Fishbowl, its employees, and its leadership.
Wiley & Sons recently published Fishbowl CEO David K. Williams’ book The 7 Non-Negotiables of Winning: Tying Soft Traits to Hard Results. Williams may not have served in the Marines, as far as I know, but he’s built like a trained soldier and he has incorporated the Marines’ motto into his work and personal life.
His book describes how Fishbowl became the success it is today by creating a liberating corporate culture. The book is also full of great advice on how to live your life faithfully and to improve yourself each day.
The 7 Non-Negotiables are, in the order set forth in the book: Respect, Belief, Trust, Loyalty, Commitment, Courage, and Gratitude.
You may have noticed that Loyalty is right smack dab in the middle of these seven traits. I like how all of these traits feed into each other and also how living one leads to living all of them. You can’t be respectful without being grateful; you can’t believe in others without trusting them; and you can’t be loyal to something or someone without committing yourself and exercising courage.
At Fishbowl, we believe in being Always Loyal to our customers by providing the best possible products and services to them. We are Always Loyal to our coworkers by thinking the best of each other and not being overly critical, but, rather, being helpful. We are Always Loyal to our leaders by having a low turnover rate and sticking with the company through good and bad times. And our leaders are Always Loyal to us by trusting us to get jobs done and by giving us a lot of latitude to try new things.
Semper Fi might be short for “Semper Fidelis,” but I think it’s also short for “Semper Fishbowl Inventory.” We strive to be synonymous with Loyalty. We may not be perfect, but we do our best every day, and we’re getting better all the time. That is Semper FI.
