Supply Chain Management Certification

Supply chain management certification can be helpful if you find yourself in a number of situations:

  • You’re just starting out in your career, and you need to establish credibility with potential employers.
  • You’ve been in a low-rung warehouse position for some time, but you want to climb the ladder and prove you can take on more of a leadership role.
  • You want to negotiate a higher salary with your employer.
  • You’d like to make better use of your time and talents by learning new skills and seeing how to better use technology in your work.
  • You want to formally demonstrate the fact that you have the skills necessary to do your job.

We will cover five of the main supply chain management certifications that are available for warehouse workers and other employees involved in different aspects of supply chain management. We’ll cover eligibility requirements, number of exams to obtain certification, costs, and maintenance.

Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP)

Offered by: The Association for Operations Management (APICS)

Eligibility: Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply for this certification:

  • Have at least 3 years of applicable supply chain experience
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree
  • Have already earned a CPIM, CLTD, CSCP, CTL, CFPIM, CIRM, SCOR-P, CPM, CSM, or CPSM certification

Testing: 1 exam with 3 modules:

  • Module 1 – Supply Chain Design
  • Module 2 – Supply Chain Planning and Execution
  • Module 3 – Supply Chain Improvements and Best Practices

Cost: Depends on the status of the test taker within North America:

  • PLUS member: $695
  • CORE member or nonmember: $915
  • Retake: $450

Applicants outside of North America will be charged higher prices, unless it’s a retake, which is the same price.

Maintenance: Every 5 years

Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD)

Offered by: APICS

Eligibility: Same as for the CSCP

Testing: 1 exam with 8 modules:

  • Module 1 – Logistics and Supply Chain Overview
  • Module 2 – Capacity Planning and Demand Management
  • Module 3 – Order Management
  • Module 4 – Inventory and Warehouse Management
  • Module 5 – Transportation
  • Module 6 – Global Logistics Considerations
  • Module 7 – Logistics Network Design
  • Module 8 – Reverse Logistics and Sustainability

Cost: Depends on the status of the test taker:

  • PLUS member: $475
  • CORE member or nonmember: $525

Maintenance: Every 5 years

Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM)

Offered by: APICS

Eligibility: Same as for the CSCP

Testing: 5 exams, which must be completed within 10 years of each other:

  • Exam 1 – Basics of Supply Chain Management
  • Exam 2 – Master Planning of Resources
  • Exam 3 – Detailed Scheduling and Planning
  • Exam 4 – Execution and Control of Operations
  • Exam 5 – Strategic Management of Resources

Cost: Depends on the status of the test taker:

  • PLUS member: $190
  • CORE member or nonmember: $290

Prices are higher outside of North America.

Maintenance: Every 5 years

Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM)

Offered by: Institute for Supply Management (ISM)

Eligibility: Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply for this certification:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in supply chain management
  • Have 5 years of experience in supply chain management without a bachelor’s degree

Testing: 3 exams:

  • Exam 1 – Foundation of Supply Management
  • Exam 2 – Effective Supply Management
  • Exam 3 – Leadership in Supply Management

Cost: Depends on the status of the test taker:

  • Member: $199 per exam
  • Nonmember: $329 per exam

Maintenance: Every 3 years

SCPro™

Offered by: Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)

Eligibility: Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply for SCPro Level 1:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree
  • Have 4 years of experience in supply chain management

The requirements increase for each subsequent level.

Testing: 3 levels of certification:

  • SCPro Level 1 – Cornerstones of Supply Chain Management
  • SCPro Level 2 – Analysis and Application of Supply Chain Challenges
  • SCPro Level 3 – Initiation of Supply Chain Transformation

Cost: Depends on the applicant’s level:

  • Level 1 – Exam fee: $975 – Member fee: $650
  • Level 2 – Exam fee: $1,500 – Member fee: $1,095
  • Level 3 – No cost, just real-world experience

Maintenance: Every 3 years
