Whether you are trying to create a blank database or connect to a different existing database, the following instructions will provide step-by-step instructions on how to do so.


[edit] Creating a new database

To create a new database you will need to be on the Fishbowl Server computer. The Fishbowl server will also need to be stopped, which will not allow any exisitng clients to stay connected.
  1. Right click on your server in the system tray by your clock and go up to options. Click Yes to stop the server.
  2. The Fishbowl Server Administration box will open up and will default to the database tab.
  3. To connect to your first blank datafile highlight the line that says 'Your Company' and select 'ok' down at the bottom. This will connect you to an already existing blank database named 'event' (located in your Fishbowl\database\data folder).
  4. Start your Fishbowl server again and connect your client. You now are connected to a blank database.


OR



  1. Create an additional blank database by repeating steps 1-2 then continue below.
  2. In the upper right hand side of the database tab select the 'new' button.
  3. Select whether your database will be internal or external. For convenience we recommend keeping an internal use database. click Next.
  4. You will now be shown a list of boxes to fill out. Leave the Database box as 'Firebird'. Enter in an Alias and Database Name for the new file being created. Your company's name would likely be what is entered here. *Note: If you have pasted a database into your data folder and are trying to connect to it, you will need to ensure that the database name is precisely the same as the database you pasted into the data folder. Click Finish.
  5. You will be directed back to the Fishbowl Server Administration box. The Alias name of your company you just created will now be displayed as a new line item in the list of database names.
  6. Highlight your newly created datafile and click ok at the bottom of the wizard. A pop-up box will inform you that your database has been changed to the newly created one. Click ok.
  7. Right click on your Fishbowl server again in the system tray and go up to start. A pop-up box will inform you that the database is importing schema. This may take a few minutes.
  8. Once your Server has completely started you can connect your client to your new blank database.


[edit] Switching to an Already Existing Database

To create a new database you will need to be on the Fishbowl Server computer. The Fishbowl server will also need to be stopped, which will not allow any
exisitng clients to stay connected.

If you have an existing database and would like to switch to an example, or to another company datafile the following instructions will assist you in doing so.

  1. Right click on your server in the system tray by your clock and go up to options. Click Yes to stop the server.
  2. The Fishbowl Server Administration box will open and will default to the database tab.

  3. Simply highlight the line of the database you are wanting to switch to by clicking on the name listed. 
  4. At the bottom of the wizard box click ok.

  5. A message box will be displayed to inform you that your database has been changed. click ok.

  6. Now we need to re-start the Fishbowl server by right clicking on your orange server icon in your system tray and going up to start.
  7. You can now log in to your client and connect to the newly changed database.
