BC Technical

Customer Profile

BC Technical currently has 80 employees with half working in their 50,000 square foot warehouse facility in West Jordan, Utah. The other 40 run three other smaller warehouses in Texas, California and Florida and work as field service technicians throughout the entire US. BC Technical has been in business for 13 years and has been awarded as one of Utah's top 100 companies for the third consecutive year. BC offers a full line of new and used parts that revolve around gamma cameras used in Nuclear Medicine. They supply over 12,000 parts to customers and although they don't manufacture new cameras, they remanufacture and service several gamma cameras for hospitals, imaging centers and cardiology clinics. They compete head to head in the marketplace with Phillips, G.E. and Siemens - all Fortune 500 Companies.

Business Challenge

BC Technical's challenge is to even the playing field with fortune 500 competitors so they need to have a streamlined manufacturing & inventory control program that allows them to work efficiently and offer greater customer service so that their clients continue to use them in the future. BC Technical keeps track of and refurbishes many different types of products. For example, they re-manufacture circuit boards valued at $10k to $30k a piece with hundreds of components consisting of many sub-assemblies. With no standardized way of tracking all the repairs and resultant warranty information, BC Technical found that they frequently lost circuit boards, made erroneous repairs on products that were under the original manufacturer's warranty or put incompatible parts on the boards which delayed the repair process. It wasn't uncommon to ship out three to four boards before finding one that would work. Chuck Hale said, "We just couldn't afford to make those mistakes - any of which could cost us $30k. And on top of that, it would delay the repair of the camera resulting in an extra day or two the client couldn't use it. This resulted in frustrated, non-repeat clients." We desperately needed a inventory control program and manufacturing solution that could help us reduce these costly errors.

Solution Overview

As BC Tech looked for a solution, they wanted something that would allow them to stay with QuickBooks for their accounting. They knew QuickBooks alone did not overcome their manufacturing and customer service problems, but there had to be something that would. Ideally, they wanted a solution that could integrate an inventory control program for QuickBooks. But initially they looked to Microsoft and Sage for high end, ERP solutions but they didn't want to have to pay $150 thousand to implement those systems. They also discovered that those solutions weren't user friendly like they'd grown to appreciate with QuickBooks. The search continued for several months.

Then they found Fishbowl Inventory. It was a fraction of the cost of other solutions, and it was intuitive. It fit the bill completely allowing them to track inventory parts and ship them out quickly. With its robust Bill of Materials with unlimited sub-assemblies, they improved the remanufacturing cycle considerably allowing them to better service their clients in a fraction of the time. They were able to continue using their QuickBooks solution with Fishbowl Inventory's Control program.

Another plus was how easy it was to get Fishbowl up and running. Other solutions set expectations for a six month implementation period. Fishbowl was fully integrated with QuickBooks and up and running within three weeks. "Training was also a snap, as the product is very intuitive," said, Beverly Hale.

Business Benefits

As a result of implementing Fishbowl Inventory's control program along with QuickBooks, BC Tech has had 800% growth. Because Fishbowl tracks everything so well, the time to repair a camera went down from 2 days to two hours. Chuck Hale said, "The error factor on repaired boards was around 50-60% before Fishbowl. Now it's less than 1%, and our lost parts have been reduced by 95%. I can't believe the difference it's made in my business."

Other changes that have resulted from the Fishbowl- QuickBooks implementation are that before, after nine years of business, BC Technical was only a regional company. Now after just four years of using Fishbowl and QuickBooks together, they do international sales and have service technicians throughout the nation.

That's not all. BC technical has experienced exponential growth while their administrative staff has had little change. So even though their growth has been 800% over the past four years, their core staff has remained about the same. They've increased their productivity by 300% thanks to the Fishbowl/QuickBooks solution.

Beverly Hale, further stated, "Fishbowl Inventory's Control Solution has resulted in a net savings to the company of $240,000 per month. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to take their company to the next level. As we grow, it grows with us. It's very scalable."
